I-Sets

#math #I-set
Let us say you exist. Let us represent you by ‘I’, then there is a ‘~I’ (not-I) as well. This ‘~I’ represents all that you are not, and I  I=UI \text{ }\cup \text{ }\sim{I} = U, meaning that ‘I’ plus not-I includes all that is. Thus ~I > I by orders of magnitude.

Unless you believe that you are the universe, which is clearly unrealistic. Though there is a line of thought that might bring you to that conclusion. If I create my own universe, in other words I am the director and every one and indeed everything in my life is under my direction — then there would be the possibility that I am my universe, aware of nothing else. However, this is fallacious, and definitely narcissistic, for there is a “universe” upon which this personal universe of yours depends, that you have not created. In fact, the very fact that you can have this experience is only because of what has already been created.

In addition, there are two counters to this:

  1. The ~I represents all the experiences that you did not experience—but could have.
  2. The ~I also includes those aspects to your surroundings which are givens, existing long before you did, that you have no control of and little say in influencing.

In the ~I exists the Other, all that is not-I. In our exploration, we then have to separate the two domains—the I and the ~I, each one shaped by the other. We will naturally experience them differently. Compare this to being in love as to observing a couple in love.

To many, this ~I represents G-d. In that case, I would never be able to experience G-d, for He is ~I, all that I am not. ~I and I are discreet, separate, I  I=0I \text{ }\cap \text{ }\sim{I} = 0, thus there is nothing to connect me to Him.

This is where the fundamental principle of His Unity enters. For as He is One, then I must also be part of Him—for there can be nothing that is truly separate from Him.

The truth is that in order for I to exist, He must have separated His very being into I and ~I, in order to make space for I to exist. He moved His being so that this drama which we call life might play out, and thus, in some mysterious way, I influence Him too.
