- Do not understand the story of the 4 rabbis who descend to the Pardes is a teaching. It speaks of the 4 basic responses to the experience. Has to be a reason, an intention—which needs to be pure (טהור) which is Rabbi Akiva–he needed to be allowed to emerge because his purpose was to teach.

He was also part of the Sephardic Jews expelled from Iberia, that introduced the Zohar to the Salonika Kabbalists. He also had a huge influence on the Kabbalah as practiced in Tzfat.

(2019) [1:02:45] … On Understanding and Faith in the Zohar
- Has an interesting piece on “Lech Lecha” as “Go to oneself.” She places this in the following context. Abraham was a deep thinker (seigel), and after diving into the meaning of the panoply of gods that existed at that time, he came to the conclusion that there was only one sovereign being. That caused him to act the way he did. However, he got stuck, and could not go beyond, because you cannot apprehend G-d with seigel alone. That is why they stopped at Haran. There G-d spoke to him, and said, “Lech Lecha” - go unto thyself. In other words, in order to know G-d, you first need to know thyself.

- In The Art of Mystical Narrative: A Poetics of the Zohar (Oxford University Press, 2018), Dr. Eitan Fishbane reveals the Zohar as an extraordinary narrative—the tale of a wandering kabbalist sage seeking wisdom in ancient Galilee—a fiction invented by 13th-century Jewish mystics in Spain. Calling it “one of the greatest works of world religious literature,” Dr. Fishbane explores the Zohar’s storytelling through the various lenses of literary criticism, clarifying its deep integration with mystical theology.
He, along with experts in Kabbalah, medieval Jewish culture, and Jewish literature, will discuss the narrative and poetic features of the Zohar in the context of comparative literature and spirituality. This event features a discussion of the narrative and poetic features of the Zohar in the context of comparative literature and spirituality, marking the publication of Dr. Fishbane’s new book, with:- @2:15-15:39 Dr. Lawrence Fine, Irene Kaplan Leiwant Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies, Mount Holyoke College;

(1:03:40) Isaiah and the Exodus: Returning from the Babylonian Exile
Interesting information on the topic. Provides historical context, and how he uses the Exodus story to influence the people to return to Israel from Babylon. She also mentions Coresh, the Persian king who allows the Hebrew nation to return to and rebuild Jerusalem, who, in Isaiah is presented as the Messian - the Anointed One - who was chosen by G-d to return the Jews to Israel — even though he is a pagan king.
